In 1716, the Presbyterian Church of North America had been established with the full Westminster Standards, without amendment. It was in the year 1729 that the first set of amendments to the Westminster Standards was adopted. In 1788, as the Presbyterian Church in the United States was constituted, constitutional changes were made in the Directory for the Public Worship of God. Then, in 1821, constitutional changes were made in government, opting for a new directory of government and discipline. Further amendments were made in the latter part of the 19th century. In the 20th century, continuing churches opted for more changes in public worship and church government with new church orders. On January 13-14, 2006, the Westminster Presbyterian Church in the United States (WPCUS) was constituted by ministers of the gospel with the assistance of elder commissioners to roll back all the amendments to the Westminster Standards and restore the directories in worship and government to the Constitution of the Church. The Westminster Presbyterian Covenant of Union was signed with vows to the full Constitution and Basis of Union, adopting the original Westminster Standards. The ministers and elders have signed vows with full subscription to the whole doctrine; hence, the Westminster Presbyterian Church in the United States is a continuing church with the Westminster Standards, as originally adopted in the Church of Scotland (1645-48) and the colonies of North America (1716). |
